Car insurance will normally only cover windscreen damage on a comprehensive policy.

Not every policy includes this cover so it is important to ask before proceeding with a new car insurance policy.

But does a windscreen claim affect your no claims bonus?
Generally the answer is NO. Here are a few examples of policy wordings to clarify the point.

Kennco Highway car insurance Policy:
We will pay for damage to the Insured Vehicle’s windscreen or windows. If this is the only damage you are claiming for your No Claims Discount will not be affected.
There is no limit on windscreen cover if –
- In any one period of insurance the windscreen or window is replaced or repaired by our approved supplier.
- Otherwise the maximum amount we pay is €100 in any one period of insurance if any other supplier carries out the repair or replacement.

Wrightway Standard car insurance policy:
If the policy provides cover for accidental breakage of the windscreen or the windows of the insured vehicle (and any scratching of bodywork resulting solely and directly from such breakage) any claims in respect of such damage will not affect the not claims bonus.

AXA car insurance policy:
A claim under this section will not affect your no-claims discount. We will cover the cost of replacing or repairing broken or damaged windscreens, windows or glass in the sunroof of the car and scratches to the bodywork caused by the glass breaking. If you use Autoglass or Allied Irish Windscreens, cover will be unlimited. If you use your own repairer, cover will be limited to €400.If a claim for broken glass is more than 50% of the market value of the car, we will only pay you the market value of your car.

Sertus car insurance policy:
If you have comprehensive cover and you claim only for broken glass in your car windscreen or any other window (excluding sunroof) or scratched bodywork caused by the broken glass your No Claim Bonus will not be reduced. There will be no limit on payment provided the repair or replacement is arranged by our Approved Windscreen Agents. If any other contractor is used the payment will not exceed €300.

Zurich car insurance policy:
We will not pay more than €225 in respect of any one claim for accidental breakage of the windscreen or of the windows of the insured vehicle. The limit however does not apply if the vehicle is taken to and repaired by one of the insurer’s approved windscreen replacement agents.

These examples give an overview of common wordings in the market. It is important to note that there are small variations and in almost every case there is a reduced amount of cover where you do not use the approved repairer.
Many of the major repairers will come to your home or place of work to repair your windscreen. All that you are required to do is give the policy number and insurer. The windscreen company will bill the insurer direct.
