What is the health insurance Irish Government Levy?
The Government Levy was announced in November 2008 and it means that every adult who has private medical insurance will be charged €160 and every child will be charged €53 in addition to gross health insurance premiums.

Where will this Government Levy go?
The vast majority of the levy collected will most likely be paid to the VHI.

How will the Government collect this levy from Health insurers?
Each health insurer must pay the Government €160 gross premium for each adult and €53 gross premium for each child.

How much will you have to pay?
The cost of this levy to each adult is €128 and to each child is €42.40 which will not apply until your next policy renewal.

Will this levy be applied to students and newborns?
Students will be charged the levy at the child rate and children under 1 will not be charged the levy until next renewal. However the levy will apply to all children over one year old whether they have paid a health insurance premium or not. E.g. 4th and subsequent children who do not pay health insurance premiums (on some plans) will have the levy applied.

Hibernian Health has launched the “Axe the Levy Campaign” which will formally challenge the Government’s health insurance levy of €160 per adult and €53 per child.
