Many car insurers include the ‘Using the vehicle abroad’ cover as standard.
Not every insurance company includes this cover so it is important to ask before proceeding with a new car insurance policy.
But what is ‘using the vehicle abroad’ cover on a car insurance policy?
This cover extension normally allows you to drive your car while abroad in any European Union country. Policy wordings may vary, but here are a few examples:
Travelers car insurance policy:
We provide the minimum cover necessary to comply with the laws of any state which is a member of the European Union whilst the insured vehicle is being used in that country. If the minimum cover in the Republic of Ireland is greater than the minimum required in the member state in which the insured vehicle is being used, the higher level of cover shall apply.
KennCo car insurance policy:
Unless you ask us to extend your cover (additional cover abroad) and pay any extra premium needed, the cover for using the insured vehicle abroad is restricted. It does not include loss or damage to the insured vehicle and depending on the country concerned may be very limited with regard to your legal liability to others.
Axa Broker car insurance policy:
Full cover will apply for you to travel to Europe for up to 31days in a row during the period of insurance.
Sertus car insurance policy:
We will provide the minimum insurance to allow you to use your car –
- In member countries of the EU
- In any other countries which have made arrangements which meet the insurance requirements of and are approved by the commission of the EU.
Zurich car insurance policy:
The full cover provided by this policy also applies whilst the insured vehicle is being used –
- In any other member country of the European Union
- In any other country in respect of which the commission of the European Union is satisfied that arrangements have been made to meet the requirements of Article 70 of the European Union Directive on insurance of civil liabilities arising from the use of motor vehicles.
- Provided that the period of foreign travel does not exceed 60 days from the date of leaving the Republic of Ireland.
NOTE: Many insurers will only provide basic Third Party Only cover whilst abroad so it is imperative that you contact your broker to inform them that you are going abroad and require full cover to apply.
